Portraits on the fly

You never know what pictures you will end up with when you shoot quickly and in a rather unattractive setting. These children were all bundled up for the cold when they came to visit me at my photo show, but they were completely charming and obviously accustomed to having their pictures taken. So, I pointed them toward the wall of windows to take advantage of the light, took about ten pictures and got some really good ones! I cropped out as much of the unattractive background as possible (cinder blocks - yuck). Their mom was thrilled with the photos - and that is all that really matters! ~mlr

Beverly Arts Center

Yesterday, Rick and I met with Alice McMahon White at the Beverly Arts Center. We hung 24 of my Irish images for the upcoming exhibit, "In the Deep Heart's Core: Ireland by Chicago Artists." Although the exhibit officially opens on Friday, February 27, most of the art work is already hanging throughout the public spaces of the BAC.

In addition to my own photography, you will also see art work by Keelan McMorrow, Mary Phelan, and Robert Johnson. Alice McMahon White will be exhibiting photos and pastel landscapes.

Visit the first floor hallway near the theater entrance, the Atrium on the first floor, and the second floor hallway outside the gallery to see all the wonderful images of Ireland.

A lot is happening during the month of March at the Beverly Arts Center - be sure to stop by! ~mlr

On Thursday, Elizabeth's fine art photography will be featured at the "One of a Kind" show at Chicago's beautiful Merchandise Mart. You will discover a juried selection of established and emerging artists from around the world, showcased in a gallery-style exhibition.

Opening Day is Thursday, from 12:00 noon to 9:00 p.m. Friday, the show runs from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

One hundred percent of Thursday's ticket sales will benefit Children's Memorial Hospital - a wonderful reason to shop Opening Day!

Elizabeth is working hard, preparing for her participation in the "One of a Kind" show. This exciting event is being held at Chicago's impressive Merchandise Mart, December 4-7, just in time for holiday shopping!

Mary is still recuperating from her August fall in the park, which resulted in a broken foot and a broken rib or two. The cast is off, but she is not allowed to put weight on the foot for at least another two weeks. She hopes to be fully operational soon!

Bryn Mawr Bricolage

On Saturday, Mayor Daley and Alderman Mary Ann Smith (on left) dedicated "Growing 2008," a wonderful mosaic mural on the south wall of the Bryn Mawr underpass of Lake Shore Drive. Artists Tracy Van Duinen and Todd Osborne made this happen, along with over 400 volunteers. "Living 2007" was previously installed on the north wall of the same underpass. Hi, this is E.J. It's my first post. Here are a few images from when Michael and Johnny (in from San Francisco) visited last month. We took the Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise and learned quite a lot! I really enjoyed crossing under the bridges, and seeing them from the water, for a change.
